Top 6 benefits of Zumba

Zumba fitness is a dance group fitness class that targets the entire body.

The popular fitness craze was started by Beto Perez, an aerobics instructor who forgot his cassette tape for class.

Instead of canceling class, he improvised by using his Latin music cassettes and eventually “Zumba” was born.

Zumba incorporates numerous world music and dance genres in order to make the class unique, fun and social.

“Exercise in disguise” is more enjoyable than exercise not disguised at all, so here is a list of the top six reasons why Zumba is beneficial.

During a typical 60-minute class, you can burn anywhere from 500 to 900 calories, making it a great way to get in a cardio workout that burns a high amount of calories and fat.

A 2016 study found that over a 12-week period of taking Zumba classes, overweight women saw an overall improvement in their cardiovascular health, as well as gaining other beneficial health effects such as decrease in body weight, decrease in pain severity and increase in muscular mass.

It’s exercise in disguise


Using a variety of music such as Salsa, Cumbia, Merengue, Reggaeton and more, Zumba is focused on dancing to the music, not exercising to the music. It is often advertised as a dance party and improves your fitness without being boring.

It helps to de-stress and unwind


During exercise, the brain releases endorphins, causing a person to feel happy. This process can alleviate prior stress as well as promote more self confidence.

Zumba fitness targets and exercises several parts of the body, including the core, legs and glutes.

Zumba is a social workout and a great way to meet people


In Zumba fitness classes, there are people of all ages. Going to class regularly creates a community within the Zumba group and allows people to meet others they otherwise wouldn’t.
