Photography makes your life better, plain and simple.
It can help you both professionally and personally. Here’s why you should try it out.
1. It’s easy to learn.
Thirty years ago, being a good photographer meant sitting for hours in the darkroom and buying a bunch of expensive gear. Now, thanks to digital cameras, learning photography is more affordable. Better still, there are lots of tutorials online explaining how to take better photographs.
2. You will be better at your job.
Photography is a form of communication. If you understand photography, that’s one more way you can communicate well. Imagine that you’re working for an adoption non-profit and you want to ask your social media followers for donations. Which do you think would be more effective: a tweet asking for donations, or a tweet asking for donations with a photo of a child that needs help?
3. It’s a great resumé piece.
Given a choice between a comm major who can take great photos and a comm major who can’t, who would you chose? Being able to take great photographs makes you a more valuable social media manager, marketer or PR practitioner.
4. It gets you involved in other industries.
Being a photographer teaches more than just photography—you learn fashion, styling, art direction, retouching, business, and marketing. Since almost every photo shoot has new people, it’s great for networking too.
5. You will have more followers on social media.
Whether it’s your personal account or the company’s, you’ll be able to produce all your own content for social media. Your Instagram feed just got 10x prettier. After all, who wants to follow an Instagram with ugly photos?
6. Your life will be well-documented.
One day you’ll be 70 years old, hanging out on a porch and drinking lemonade with your fellow senior citizens. You’re probably talking about golf, politics, or reminiscing on old memories. You know what helps people reminisce? Hundreds of photos of the last six decades. If hindsight is 20/20, photo documenting your own life will make it 20/10.
7. You can travel.
Photography gives you a great excuse to travel. After all, the best photo shoots are in cool and exotic places, not boring ones. Like Taiwan. I guess you’ll have to go hang out in Taiwan for a week. The best part is that your job will be paying for it, not you. Nice.
