5 reasons you should be listening to podcasts

Podcasts get a bad rap, mostly because a lot of people don’t know exactly what they are.

A podcast is simply a digital audio file available on the Internet.

It is a common misconception that a podcast can only consist of a person or group of people talking about dull subject matter.

While this may be true for some, it is certainly not the case for all the podcasts out there.

Take my favorite podcast, Your Mom’s House, as an example. Hosts Tom Segura and Christina Pazsitsky have an entire portion of their show dedicated to “brown talk.”

Yep, brown talk is all about poop.

While brown talk certainly isn’t for everyone, I implore you to adopt podcasts into your lifestyle for the following reasons.

1. You’ll laugh…maybe even a lot.

The world’s funniest people are podcasters.

Joe Rogan, Bill Burr, Whitney Cummings and Joey Diaz are all world-famous comedians with weekly podcasts of their own.

If you enjoy a particular comedian’s work, podcasts allow you to get to know these individuals outside of their standup specials.

Fair warning, however – listening to your favorite comedian’s podcast while in a public place could cause hilarious outbursts of laughter. This can be especially embarrassing if by yourself.

2. Free entertainment

If you own an iPhone, you have access to thousands of free podcasts in the palm of your hand.

Even if you don’t own one, podcasts can be accessed through a variety of websites like Podbean and Radiolab.

It is not often in this day and age to find entertainment free of any charges, but podcasts are one of these.

3. Knowledge

You will learn something new each time you listen to a podcast.

I can’t guarantee that every podcast contains information as groundbreaking as the content offered in a show like Invisibilia.

I can guarantee, however, that you are bound to gain some new knowledge regardless of what you choose to listen to.

Even on a show as goofy as The Fighter and The Kid, where the hosts claim they make their living “by telling dick jokes,” they include a segment called “droppin’ knowledge.”

This is where one of the hosts, comedian Bryan Callen, provides listeners with information he has learned from the multitude of books he has read.

4. Perfect for road trips

Do you ever find yourself growing tired of listening to the same songs over and over again during the course of a road trip?

Of course you do.

Podcasts can be a great alternative in your travel routine.

Plus, the majority of podcasts are about an hour in length or longer.

You can simply press play and be assured you will be entertained for the next 60 minutes.

5. Something for every type of person

If you love comedy, check out any of the podcasts I have mentioned above.

All about health and fitness? Listen to The Total Human Optimization Podcast with Aubrey Marcus.

Do you love a good a good mystery? Serial is perfect for you.

If you’re still not convinced, Google one of your favorite activities with the word podcast after it.

Unless you are into something terrible like kicking puppies, I am certain you will find a podcast that suits your interests.
