Three weeks before the Villanova men’s basketball team won the NCAA tournament in magnificent fashion, there was a team left out of March Madness that had every right to be there.
The Monmouth Hawks men’s basketball team was not invited to the Big Dance for doing exactly what it was supposed to do – win…and win against top teams.
The selection committee absolutely should have put Monmouth in the tournament, and when it didn’t, it sent a terrible message to mid-majors across the nation:
No matter who you play, how good you may be, or how great you are for the tournament, if you aren’t a major school and don’t win your conference tournament, nothing else matters.
It was a travesty, and here’s why.
